All student’s health status and abilities must be compatible with the tasks and duties of a MLT including the ability to perform certain motor skills involved in collecting blood, using pipettes and a microscope, and accurately reading color charts for interpretation. Students must also be able to meet the essential skills noted on the MLT Essential Skills Form and Supplemental Questionnaire.
Students need to complete the these forms prior to an interview for admission to the program.
Have you heard about our Free A&P I Prep course?
The Anatomy & Physiology I Prep Course is a free, self-paced course designed to prepare students for the rigor and content of Anatomy & Physiology I, a 4-credit lab science course. This course is the pre-requisite for A&P I.
The Program Director will begin applicant interviews in April of each year.
Requirements for Practicum Eligibility
- Earn grade of B- in all program specific courses and grade of C in Liberal Arts courses
- Applicant Interview

Medical Laboratory Technician Supplemental Application Questionnaire
One of the expectations of the applicant for the Medical Laboratory Technician Program is that they have some knowledge of the medical laboratory field. Therefore, we ask that applicants provide the College with evidence of this knowledge by watching a short video and answering these questions.
Program Goals
To prepare students for employment by providing entry level technical skills for routine laboratory procedures in the clinical areas of chemistry, hematology, blood bank, microbiology, immunology, urinalysis and phlebotomy and to prepare students to successfully sit for the national certification exam with ASCP-BOC.
Program Outcomes
- Identify clinical laboratory test results associated with health and common disease processes.
- Analyze clinical laboratory test results, identifying normal, reactive and abnormal states.
- Integrate and apply physical science knowledge with clinical laboratory science practices and procedures.
- Integrate and apply biological science knowledge and the scientific method of discovery with clinical laboratory science practices and procedures.
- Demonstrate professional conduct and practice behavior consistent with established professional code of ethics.
- Demonstrate skills acquired through the Liberal Arts requirements of the RVCC curriculum, integrating them into the role of the Medical Laboratory Technician
